Main materials: seagrass, banana fiber
Our baskets are made from vegetable fibers. They smell and therefore feel wonderfully like nature.
What is commonly called 'seagrass' by basket makers is actually not an (under)water plant, but a small, palm-like plant that is common on sandy beaches in the tropics of Asia. The leaves of the plants, which are often grown by people, are separated, cut into strips, dried and then processed by hand.
Banana fibers are the fibers from the layered trunks of banana trees used in agriculture. The intense brown color occurs naturally when the fibers are dried in the sun for about a week. The individual strips are then rolled into the characteristic, approximately 6 mm thick strands. Only old, dying banana trees are used for this material. This gives these crops a second life as a dimensionally stable and robust raw material for many handmade baskets here at Soeji.
